A call to embrace equality and march for equality was the theme of an International Women’s Day rally in Barrie.
Organized by the Women & Children’s Shelter of Barrie, participants left from the city hall rotunda and marched through the downtown late Wednesday afternoon.
Prior to the march, the shelter held an Empowerment Luncheon and fundraiser.
While the Ministry of Children, Community and Social Services provides 60 per cent of the base funding, executive directer Teresa MacLennan has said because the shelter is always at capacity, they have to raise extra dollars.
The shelter is funded for 27 beds but is often maxed out at 35.
MacLennan has said they have to raise about $350,000 annually to maintain services and supports.
