More and more products in the U.S. are being chained away to avoid theft.

We’re used to seeing things like razor blades and perfumes locked away in a glass case, but more and more items are being added to the list, including laundry detergent in the United States.

NYC resident somajorr @somajor recently showed the laundry detergent chained to the shelf at her local bodega.

This is a recent example of U.S. chains “chaining” products to crack down on theft.

Last month, Dr. Emily Long (@dr.ems) posted to TikTok that it took her over an hour to get some essentials from Target because so many of them were locked away, including low-cost toiletries.

“Behold the dystopian nightmare that is my Target now,” she said.

She says she was so fed up by the end she didn’t have any desire to cruise the store for some fun items and just wanted to get out of there.

The added security measures are said to be in response to the uptick in theft, with sources saying it’s the everyday items that are most stolen.
