Get to Know Andrew Lindley, Supreme DJ’s – GV 45

February 26, 2021 By Patricia Dent Leave a Comment

I’m Andrew Lindley with Supreme DJs

I was newly self-employed right before the shut down of COVID.

I’m not gonna lie, COVID was a struggle.

I had just quit my job the previous summer.

I’m in the events industry, so safe to say, we were hit hard…..

We were on track to have the best year ever, and then……

Nothing,

For a year.

I’m sure you all understand how terrible this has been for every single one of us and my heart goes out to anyone who has been affected.

You may hear it a lot, but what I’ve found is really true, is “we’re all in this together”.

And for anyone working on the front lines…

You guys are the real heroes!!!

I know events might not be on anyone’s mind right now, but in a world of complete disconnection, a lot of us are just waiting for the day where we can be together once again!

In a – dare I say it – “social” gathering.

After having every single event rescheduled, and not exactly any new bookings coming in, I wasn’t sure what I was going to do… I even considered…… Going back to work……

NO !!!!!

I couldn’t bear to do it.

With the ultimate pivot, I created an online DJ group called The DJ Connect,

where I help DJs who are struggling to get booked right now, start their DJ career and create their own business, with the Instant DJ Blueprint.

When I first learned to DJ, I really struggled.  And definitely was not one to EVER ask for help.

I had to figure it all out by myself, even before the days of YouTube.

So it took a while……

I had already helped a lot of DJs start out their career in real life. The idea just spawned that I could teach other new DJs what it took me 15 years to figure out.

And how they could create the business of their dreams as well.

Joining Grow Vantage was such a gift to me, allowing me to see that it really was possible to create a business.

I can only hope to serve as many other DJs to do the same thing!

I remember when I first showed up to Patricia’s strategy session, I don’t actually know how I even got there, but within the short session, she already helped me with a couple questions I had at the time.

It blew my mind. And knowing me, I would have spent the next 6 months TRYING to figure it out by myself….

It’s crazy what can happen when you just ask for help or ask for directions!

Knowing how hard a struggle I had, I truly just love helping out others and it was natural to move this to the online space.

I don’t know about you, but I personally can NOT wait for events to come back to life. So when events return…

What do you need to think about to make an event special? Here’s a few things to keep in mind

At Supreme DJs, we believe that every event is a special one, no matter what kind..

Whether its a holiday party, or just a “Returned from COVID alive” party, we like to smash expectations and really provide the ultimate party experience,

So if you’ve ever had any of these issues:

  • a DJ who doesn’t play any of the music you want
  • all your employees or guests normally leave early
  • and honestly, they just played the chicken dance???

You can do much better than that!!

Give us a shout if you want to:

  • hear the music you want at your event
  • to make sure everyone dances all night
  • have the stress-free night of your life!

I am so optimistic that 2021 will be a good year! As much as 2020 has sucked, the world just needs a little more kindness right now. Hopefully, we can all get back to work very soon and as a whole we can conquer this together!

Grateful to know all of you and hopefully we can get to see one another soon!

Cheers to an amazing 2021!

Get to Know Julia Hayman (GV48) and Jayne Hill (GV29)

February 12, 2021 By Patricia Dent Leave a Comment

Julia Hayman (GV48) from On the Ball Orthotics and Jayne Hill (GV29) from Vintage Health Link are great referring partners who share a space at On the Ball Orthotics. Their specialties complement each other very well due to the complex nature of feet.

Julia: I am a Pedorthist who specializes in the treatment of foot, knee, hip and lower back pain through footwear and foot orthotics. Common conditions are plantar fasciitis, metatarsalgia, shin splints, diabetes, and arthritis to name a few. Proper support helps to relieve stress and strain caused from the way the feet are moving.  I enjoy all types of exercise and the outdoors. In my spare time I like to keep busy with volunteer work, especially with the Rotaract Club of Barrie.

Jayne: I am an Advanced Footcare Nurse who provides treatment for foot conditions such as calluses, corns, ingrown toenails, and trimming of thick and fungal nails. Diabetic foot assessments and lower limb assessments are also a part of my scope of practice. Next year I will be celebrating 40 years as an R.N. I have an awesome husband and 4 grown boys. I feel fortunate to live in an area of Barrie with hiking, kayaking and swimming very close and do these activities on a regular basis. I am an outdoorsy person who loves nature and it’s calming effects. Not just while out in it but also painting it as a landscape artist. I’m hoping to do more travelling when things open up again. My trip to Sicily for a artists retreat last year was cancelled due to the pandemic.

What are some of these conditions they help you manage and some tips on preventing (or recognizing) some of these conditions? Just below see how to prevent corns and calluses.

Foot Tips for the Pandemic Life:

  1. Wear indoor shoes:  As most of us are at home more often these days, shoes may not be worn as frequently. Increase barefoot or unsupported walking can lead to an increase in pressure to the bottom of the feet, leading to calluses, corns, or other pain.
  2. Wear the proper shoes during activity, both indoors and outdoors:  The proper shoes are important during activities like walking, running or at home exercises. If the shoes are too tight or loose, extra pressure is put on areas of the foot, leading to calluses, corns, or other pain.
  3. Get your feet checked:  If your daily routine includes more walking/activity, it may be a good time to get your feet checked out. With a change in routine, the body may need additional support to protect from these calluses, corns, or other pain.

Calluses and Corns

Here are some tips for how to prevent corns and calluses. (Of course if you have them, let us help you treat them. We go through how to prevent calluses and corns from coming back.).

What are calluses and corns? Thickened areas of skin. A corn tends to be deeper and have a more packed centre than a callus. It is often smaller and more painful.

Prevention

We will be able to remove calluses or corns for you, but you can prevent them by offloading any pressure areas causing these skin irritations.

Foot orthotics help to offload pressure and/or rubbing (shear). They can support the arch if your arches has collapsed.

Proper fitting shoes prevent pressure and shear that happens as a result of badly fitting shoes. Look at the length, width and depth to make sure shoes fit properly.

Here are some tips:

  • The length should be spaced about a thumb’s width (0.5”-0.75”) between the end of the longest toe and the end of the shoe. (Hint: the longest toe may be the second toe).
  • The width should be wide enough that the sides of are not bulging out of the shoe. You can test this by removing and standing on the shoe’s insole. Make sure the widest points of the front of the foot should be in line with outline of the insole.
  • The Depth: Try and pinch the material at the end of the laces (towards to toes). It should have some play, but not enough to grab with both fingers.

We can recommend over the counter medicated creams that work well to soften the hard skin. Foam pads and small toe coverings can also help.

Causes

Why do corns and calluses happen? This thickened skin is a response to an area of higher pressure or rubbing (shearing). To protect the skin, the body responds by thickening and hardening it.

  1. When your footwear does not fit properly: if your shoes are too small, too narrow, too short, aren’t deep enough, or are too big (so your foot slides around in the shoe).
  2. Any bony prominences on the foot may cause excessive pressure and rubbing from the shoe if it’s not fitted properly. If your foot is moving “abnormally”, E.g. The inside of the big toe is a common location for callusing when an arch collapses or you have flat feet.
  3. With a high arch, pressure typically occurs at the opposite side of the foot.
  4. Another common area for pressure is  when the ball of the foot collapses.
  5. Toes that are stuck in a bent position (hammer toes) or toes that are tight together can develop calluses and corns on the top of them, on the ends or even between the toes from rubbing.

10 Years in Business! Barrie’s Favourite Nutritionist! Readers Choice Award winner 7 years in a row!  Please visit www.makegoodchoices.ca for more information

Hi GV’ers

My name is Katherine Parent and I, like you have been making the most of the situation before us. This pandemic has certainly brought to light how important our health is. That’s my thing!

I am a Registered and Certified Nutritional Practitioner and owner of Make Good Choices. 2020 marked my 10th year in business and I’m still working.  It’s been a whirlwind of life’s events and having to make some important decisions for the health of my business, the health of me and the health of my loved ones.

I assist women particularly who find themselves in a transition of some sort. They may be experiencing health challenges and not eating well, not sleeping well, caring for a loved one, being there for their grown children and grandchildren. It’s a real energy zapper and a time of looking in the mirror and not knowing where their health and vitality has gone. Learning how to “Make Good Choices” for themselves is a priority and I meet them where they are and assist them with tackling their food first, one bite at a time, and one day at a time. My packages reflect various levels of support however, they all have these elements. Reset, Recharge, Revitalize.

As a business owner, wife, mother, grandmother, daughter & sister I know all too well the various responsibilities that come along with such important facets of my life.  If you’re interested in signing up for a program please contact me through my email; katherine@makegoodchoices.ca.

You may also wish to join my FB Business page www.Facebook.com/MakeGoodChoicesCA and

I, along with some others began a support and resource community for those in the “Sandwich Generation.” We have a group FB page www.Facebook.com/BarrieSandwichGeneration. If you are caring for a loved one and would like support and some resources please join the group.

My ideal clients have followed me to the world of Zoom and Skype and phone and my corporate wellness programs and lunch and learns have taken on a world of their own. I’m visiting companies and organizations on FB Live and Zoom to bring health into their environments. Whether it’s nutrition for business or personal the goal is to assist clients in wading through the influx of information and really “Make Good Choices” right then and there.

Here’s a post I made at the beginning of the year that includes some tips around nutrition & wellness. Enjoy and hope to see you all sooner than later in person.

Be well, be safe, and Make Good Choices for a Healthier, Happier You.  Katherine.

Top Self Care Tips to start your year:

  1. Nutrition- start your day off right and drink water, water, and water. I love a combination of hot water, lemon, turmeric, grated ginger & a tiny bit of pure honey. You may opt to add in garlic too if you’re feeling run down. Include good proteins, low GL carbs and good essential fats for every meal and snack. I can assist you with this.
  2. Exercise- nothing like a good walk everyday as often or as long as you can. Aim for at least 30 minutes of some form of exercise daily. My saving grace is walking every single day no matter what the weather.
  3. Sleep- It is true what they say about sleep being the one thing that can rejuvenate your stressed adrenals. Aim for 8 hours if you can. Self-care includes sleep. See my self-care monthly planner.
  4. Attitude- A good attitude is half the battle. Looking at the glass half full rather than half empty helps. Seize each day as a new opportunity for possibilities and smile Get dressed for whatever may come your way and remember you attract what you put out.
  5. Supplements- As much as we’d like to think we eat healthy, it’s often not enough nutrient absorption that occurs. With consumption of processed foods or intake of caffeine, alcohol and more acidic foods versus alkaline we may be lacking. To support digestion, assimilation and detoxification it’s great to have vitamin and mineral support along with a good probiotic and digestive enzyme.
